Weekly Randomness for Friday June 3, 2016

Did someone say June already?!

News that made me stop what I was doing to look it up.
  • A byproduct of the "Publish or Perish" expectation, which is a byproduct of inadequate funding for science research, which is a byproduct of.... (I could go on...)
  • Another argument for proper livestock farming practices
  • Uff-dah! All that bending and kneeling and reaching - I call it Yard Yoga 😜

Weekly Shits n' Giggles

Weekend Aims
  • Outside: time to map the gardens before I really forget what's planted where.
  • Inside: annual rummage in a few weeks, time to start gathering goods (i.e. de-clutter!)
  • Outside: Golf in the evening! So far we've seen coyote, fox, and deer (countless birds).

Outside wins!

Best way to approach a Friday the 13th

News that made me stop what I was doing to look it up.
Weekly Shits n' Giggles

Weekend Aims
  • Brunch and a classic movie at Avalon Theater
  • Season opener for the Elkhorn Flea!!!
  • Mulch. More mulch. Finishing up planting containers. And mulch.

** For the Monty Python fans

Bad start to this Friday the 13th for HandyMan....

Whole batch of lemon curd-filled lemon cupcakes with lemon-mascarpone icing rendered inedible by pavement and bad luck.... sigh.....

Magnet Monday: Transit

Cheesy Refrigerator Magnet for Monday, May 9, 2016
"Serial No. 1, c.1903", plastic image, circa 2013

Today the planet Mercury is moving across in front of the sun where we can see it.

It doesn't actually have anything to do with this magnet, but they're both pretty neat.

We picked this one up at the Harley-Davidson Museum. Definitely worth the time even if you're not a hog fan.

Magnet Monday features a selection from our semi-vast and ever growing collection of cheesy refrigerator magnets. Without doubt the perfect souvenir. Only slightly less cheesy than collecting snow globes but a whole lot easier to smuggle in your bra. If need be. Which I hope it never is. Unless it's really worth it.

Grant Park Owl Prowl December 11

I'm so excited that the Friends of Grant Park are teaming up with the Schlitz Audobon Center to showcase some raptors at the Grant Park Clubhouse. Tomorrow evening, there will be several raptors for meet and greet - a real chance to see the birds up close and personal: "Cutright" the Peregrine Falcon, "Dory" the Saw-whet Owl, "Malary" the Kestrel (one of my favorites), "Tskili" the Great Horned owl, and "Tucker" the Screech Owl.

Then the plan is to head out into the park after dark and "hoot up" some wild owls, see if they sass back. We live very close to the park, and we hear Great Horned Owls frequently, every now and then a Screech Owl. There's just something very untamed about hearing owls at night; for a moment, even though I'm snug in my bed, it feels as though I were camping in the thickest woods.

Please join the Friends of Grant Park for an unusual evening with some winged ambassadors from the Schlitz Audubon Center:
Thursday, Dec. 11th at 6:15 p.m.
Program starts promptly at 6:30
Cookies & cider at 7:30
Owl Prowl, weather permitting, at 8:00
Details at the FoGP website

Family Ride

When we bought our house several years ago, a selling point for us was its proximity to the Oak Leaf Trail. We love to get our bicycles out on the trail whenever we can. This section is one of our favorites.

Milwaukee with a view. Magnifique - n'est-ce pas?!

News and Views (i.e. TCD and Sculpture)

It's always exciting to learn new things about your hometown. Well, at least as long as those things classify as neato-keen. Today was gracious enough to provide two to check out.

The Third Coast Digest

geekMan and I really enjoy exploring Milwaukee, so it's always nice to know we are not the only people relishing what this coastal cosmetropolis has to offer. The TCD is new to me and on first glance it seems promising as an alternative news-voice. I've plugged it into my reader, so only time will tell.

The Lynden Sculpture Garden

Previously called the Bradley Sculpture Garden, this collection was recently renamed and opened for public viewing. I never knew it was there before, so this is all totally new to me. I've heard of Mrs. Bradley in terms of her art collections and her generous donations to the Milwaukee Art Museum. I don't know the full history of these sculptures, but from what I can gather reading Eddee Daniel's blog Arts without Borders, the garden used to be opened only once a year to the public. Now it's open two days a week all year long. I'm keen to see this collection and how different pieces look now and after the snow falls. And in Spring. You get the idea.
